Satakunta's food tourism has huge potential to become an attraction for the region, in addition to other tourist attractions. As one step towards increasing this attraction, four food tourism routes have been developed in Satakunta, offering tourists the opportunity to discover the region's diverse food culture. The food routes have been developed in cooperation with tourism entrepreneurs and developers and each route has its own theme.

Food tourists in Finland

Food tourism is tourism where the attraction is the experience of local food and drink. Visit Finland has divided tourists into different target groups according to their needs and motivations when travelling. Each target group naturally includes food, but foodies have a strong motivation to travel for culinary experiences. Foodies are a target group interested in more sophisticated food experiences as well as local food culture. (Visit Finland, 2023).

Travelling for food alone is still relatively new in Finland, but combining food with cultural attractions, music events and theatres, for example, is already attracting many tourists. Food tourists are interested in food-related activities, cooking courses, visits to wineries, shopping malls, markets and farm shops, and of course eating out. In the Satin region too, there is a wide range of destinations from wineries to farm shops and summer cafés and restaurants.

Summer food tourism routes to discover Satakunta

In the Gurmeeta-Satakunta food tourism development project, tourism entrepreneurs and developers have developed four great food routes in the region: From Ironworks to Ironworks – A Culinary Tour in Satakunta, Make yourself at home Route, Taste the Forest, Fall in Love with the Wines – Culinary Route and the Happy wife, happy life summer cruising food routes. In Satakunta, distances between destinations are relatively short and you can easily do one food route in a day.

Each route has its own theme and is told from the perspective of a fictional food traveller. From Ironworks to ironworks the food traveller is thinking about a trip to the association, and on the Make yourself at home route, the food traveller has been asked by a group of friends to plan a nice summer trip to Satakunta. For the occasional summer traveller, a stunning food route opens to the scenery of northern Satakunta on the Taste the Forest, Fall in Love with the Wines route, and for the summer cruiser, a motorbike is harnessed up and headed for destinations in the Kokemäenjoki Valley, from farm shops to summer cafés. These four food routes showcase some of the food culture of the region, but there is much more for food travellers to experience in the province beyond these four routes.

The Satakunta food routes can be found on the Visit Satakunta/ Taste Satakunta website.

Each route can be found via Google Maps and the routes are accompanied by tips on where else to visit along the way.
